Abandoning the life you built to escape abuse is one of the most difficult things a person can do. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon case. When Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) was contacted by a veteran in this very situation, looking for a new start, AKWP immediately got to work.
Kayla* is an Army Reserve Veteran, serving from 1988-1996, who bravely left an unhealthy relationship. This meant leaving most of her possessions, transportation, and job behind- at the height of the pandemic. For the time being Kayla stayed in a hotel with only the belongings she was able to take with her. Things turned for the worse when the hotel she was residing in had a plumbing leak, resulting in a flood that ruined her devices, documents, and photos. With no job, transportation, and the loss of many of her possessions, Kayla left her home state with wet shoes and just the clothes on her back and headed for North Carolina. It was there that she connected with the local Salvation Army, which helped her secure a job opportunity as a dialysis technician and referred her to AKWP for further assistance.
In September, Kayla reached out to AKWP for resources and support before she left for Alaska. After speaking with AKWP Case Coordinator Jordan Rashea, Kayla expressed that her number one priority was obtaining stable housing before she arrived. Jordan was able to connect Kayla with Alaska housing and AWARE, a local organization that provides supportive services and safe shelter for domestic violence survivors. With the help of AKWP, Kayla was able to secure an apartment and begin her new job in October. Once she’s settled, her next goal is to get a handicap-accessible vehicle.
In a feat of bravery and strength, Kayla is settled in Alaska and making great strides to thrive in her new community. AKWP is proud to support veterans like Kayla in creating a safe and happy life for themselves.
